Positive news for Sharks star after scary injury

The Cronulla Sharks have confirmed star forward Andrew Fifita has successfully undergone laryngeal surgery on Tuesday after suffering a significant throat injury during the Sharks’ narrow loss to the Newcastle Knights on Sunday.

Fifita was involved in a heavy collision with the Knights’ Tyson Frizell early in the second half and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after paramedics assessed him almost 20 minutes after the game.

The 32-year-old was reportedly placed into a medically induced coma, but after a successful surgery, he is expected to make a full recovery.

“Andrew Fifita underwent laryngeal surgery late today in Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital,” a Sharks statement read.

“The surgeon carrying out the procedure informed that the surgery was successful, with Andrew expected to make a full recovery.

“Andrew will now remain in the ICU in the short term before continuing his recovery in hospital.

“Andre’s wife Nikki and the Fifita family would like to express their thanks to their many friends, Sharks members and fans and the wider rugby league community for the support and well wishes received, with the family now looking for some space and privacy during the recovery process.

“The Sharks will support Nikki and her family and allow Andrew the time to recover and ask that their wishes for privacy are respected during this time.”

The collision between Fifita and Frizell was assessed by the NRL’s match review committee; however, they cleared any Knights player of any wrongdoing.

The Sharks will contest the final three games of the season without Fifita, having come off two straight defeats and only losing by two points in each game against the Warriors and the Knights.

Josh Hannay’s side will face the Wests Tigers on Saturday before rounding out the season with clashes against the Brisbane Broncos and the Melbourne Storm as they fight tooth and nail to finish in the top eight.
