PM Modi unveils initiative to deepen engagement with Pacific Island countries

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a bid to enhance India’s influence in the strategically significant Pacific Islander countries, revealed an ambitious multi-faceted development plan at the third edition of the Forum for India–Pacific Islands Cooperation.

“Climate change, natural disasters, hunger, poverty, and various health-related challenges were already prevalent. Now, new issues are emerging. Barriers are arising in the supply chains of food, fuel, fertilizer, and pharmaceuticals,’ the Prime Minister said in his opening remarks.

Emphasising India’s commendable record in supplying vital medicines, vaccines and food to Pacific Island nations, the Prime Minister introduced an innovative initiative aimed at bolstering India’s engagement with the region.

“To boost healthcare in the Pacific region, we have decided to establish a super-specialty cardiology hospital in Fiji. This hospital will be equipped with trained staff, modern facilities, and infrastructure, and it will serve as a lifeline for the entire region. The Indian government will bear the full cost of this mega greenfield projects,” the Prime Minister announced.

Further, New Delhi will also assist all 14 Pacific Island countries in setting up dialysis units. India will also hold programs in the island nations to provide prosthetic limbs to persons in need.

“Through the Jan Aushadhi Scheme in India, more than 1800 high-quality generic medicines are being provided to people at affordable prices. For example, the anti-diabetes medication is available at up to 90% lower cost at Jan Aushadhi Centers as compared to the market prices. Other medicines are also available at a discounted price, ranging from 60% to 90% of the market cost. I propose bringing similar Jan Aushadhi Centers to your countries,” Prime Minister Modi announced in a step forward for the bilateral relationship.

Information technology, SMEs and clean energy will also be a key focus for India to strengthen the collaboration. New Delhi will also provide over 1000 scholarships under the ITEC scheme for training over the next five years.

The announcement of this program comes on the back of China’s increased outreach to Pacific Island nations.
