PM Modi lists out ₹6.5 lakh crore worth ‘Modi’s guarantee’ for farmers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke on the benefits his government is providing to farmers. PM Modi said that the government is providing ₹50,000 annual benefits to each farmer with ₹6.5 lakh crore allocated to the agriculture sector. He asserted that it is not just a promise but “Modi’s guarantee”. PM Modi listed out the benefits for farmers in terms of fertilizer subsidy, foodgrains procurement, and PM-KISAN.
“The government is making sure that every farmer in the country receives around ₹50,000 every year in some way or the other. This means, under the BJP government at the Centre, there is a guarantee that every farmer gets ₹50,000 in various forms,” he said while addressing the 17th Indian Cooperative Congress here.
“Ye Modi ki guarantee hai. Aur maine jo kiya hai, woh bata raha hoon, vaade nahi bata raha hoon (This is Modi’s guarantee. I am only talking about what I have done and not the promises),” the prime minister said.
“On average, the government is spending more than ₹6.5 lakh crore yearly on agriculture and farmers,” Modi said.
Over the course of the past nine years, Prime Minister Modi asserted that the government has taken measures to ensure the availability of fertilizers at more affordable rates compared to other nations. Additionally, substantial quantities of grains have been procured at the minimum support price (MSP), and significant amounts have been directly credited to farmers’ bank accounts through the PM-KISAN scheme, thereby bypassing intermediaries.
₹2.5 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers
Further elaborating on the matter, the prime minister revealed that an impressive sum of ₹2.5 lakh crore has been transferred directly into the bank accounts of farmers in the last four years through the PM-KISAN scheme. Under this scheme, farmers receive an annual amount of ₹6,000 as financial support.
“You can guess how big this amount is from the fact that the total agricultural budget for the five years before 2014 was less than ₹90,000 crore,” Modi said.
Shielded farmers from global uncertainties
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the government has taken proactive measures to shield farmers from the consequences of escalating global fertilizer prices. He underscored that this “Modi guarantee” has been implemented by the central government under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Modi further pointed out that farmers are benefiting from the government’s efforts, as they are able to procure a 45-kilogram bag of urea at approximately ₹270, which is significantly lower than the prices in other countries. For instance, the cost of the same quantity of urea is ₹720 in Bangladesh, ₹800 in Pakistan, ₹2,100 in China, and over ₹3,000 in the United States.
