Playoff Takeaways: Islanders can’t overcome bad bounces, brutal missed call in OT

The New York Islanders struggled to generate quality scoring chances at five-on-five in a Game 1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this week. That wasn’t the case at all Wednesday in Game 2, however several undisciplined penalties and a couple unfortunate bounces at the expense of Ilya Sorokin, plus a brutal missed call during overtime, sees the Islanders down 0-2 in this opening-round series.

The Islanders outhit, outskated and won more puck battles than their opponents in Game 2 but New York’s frequent trips to the penalty box in the first half of the game – mostly due to careless stick play – limited their time at even strength and forfeited the momentum to Carolina far too often.

Casey Cizikas left Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho bloody in the first period – a high-sticking double minor that was only cut short when Carolina’s Teuvo Teravainen was called for tripping less than 90 seconds later.

The Islanders began the second period killing off a reckless Matt Martin interference call, which they did, but then a couple minutes later Samuel Bolduc got his stick up on Brett Pesce who needed repairs.

On the back half of that double minor, Sebastian Aho (no, not that one, the other one) accidentally batted a puck into his own net past Sorokin on the flukiest goal thus far in the post-season. Stefan Noesen was credited with the power-play goal for Carolina, who are now 3-for-10 overall with the man advantage through two games in the series.

The Islanders eventually settled down, stayed out of the box and were able to generate some consistent pressure that resulted in three unanswered goals.

Kyle Palmieri got his team on the board with a nice wraparound and Mathew Barzal tied the game with his first goal since early February.

Brock Nelson temporarily put the Islanders ahead 3-2 with his first of the playoffs midway through the third period but three minutes later Jaccob Slavin bounced one in off Sorokin’s head from behind the goal line to take back the momentum New York had built up.

Early in overtime, Carolina forward Jordan Martinook’s stick hit New York defenceman Scott Mayfield clear in the face yet it was not called and mere seconds later Jesper Fast wristed home the game winner off a nice feed from Jordan Staal.

The irony that New York was dinged eight minutes for two high-sticking calls earlier in the game then one gets missed right in front of two officials at the most pivotal moment of the game adds salt to the wound. Carolina finished one-for-six on the power play, while the Islanders didn’t have any opportunities with the man advantage.

It’s not that Carolina didn’t have any missed calls to complain about either. Teravainen is expected to miss the remainder of the series with a broken hand that will require surgery after getting hacked by Jean-Gabriel Pageau when taking a shot late in the third period.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour wasn’t happy about the “tomahawk chop” after the game despite his team’s dramatic victory.

It’s unclear at this point who will slot into the lineup in place of Teravainen and how Carolina’s lines will shake out when the series shifts to Long Island on Friday for Game 3.

Returning Bennett, multi-goal Montour come up huge for Panthers

David Pastrnak entered the TD Garden on Wednesday donning a salmon-coloured suit, but it was his Boston Bruins who were swimming upstream for the majority of Game 2 against the Florida Panthers.

The underdogs from South Florida took the lead on three separate occasions before lighting up Linus Ullmark with a four-goal final period to secure the game and tie up the series at one apiece.

Panthers goalie Alex Lyon kept his team in the game with several key stops in the opening period and was solid throughout his 34-save performance in a 6-2 blowout win.

Forward Sam Bennett returned to the Panthers lineup for the first time in a month and opened the scoring for his team with his 14th career post-season goal. Bennett has scored at least one playoff goal in five consecutive seasons. He also led all skaters with seven shots on net and, although he didn’t record an assist on the play, forced a turnover on the forecheck that led directly to the Panthers fourth goal of the game.

Brandon Montour, meanwhile, had never scored in the playoffs before Wednesday but led the way with a pair of goals in the third period. Montour was named first star of the game and was given a shout-out by his captain in the locker room following the win.

The Bruins, who were without Patrice Bergeron like they were in Game 1, got chippy in the waning minutes when the game was out of reach.

There were seven game misconducts handed out in the final two minutes alone, five to Bruins players and two to Panthers. We’ll see how that translates in terms of intensity for Game 3, which is scheduled for Friday night in Florida.

Wild’s goalie rotation backfires as Hintz elevates Stars

Minnesota Wild netminder Filip Gustavsson stopped 51 of the 53 shots he faced in his first career playoff appearance in Monday’s Game 1 double-overtime road win over the Dallas Stars. Instead of sticking with the hot hand for Game 2, Minnesota, as they’ve done consistently throughout the season, rotated their netminders and three-time Stanley Cup winner Marc-Andre Fleury got the nod instead.

Unfortunately for Fleury and the Wild, Dallas poured on the pressure early and often, and Roope Hintz led the way by kicking his game into another gear.

Hintz was the best player on the ice for either team, recording the first hat trick of the 2023 playoffs in a 7-3 Stars win. Hintz opened the scoring with an early shorthanded goal, set up Jamie Benn’s 21st career playoff tally that was one of six total goals in a full-throttle, back-and-forth second period.

The Finnish forward scored his team’s final two goals and hats rained down from the stands.
