pixel: Google working on 2nd-gen Tensor chips, most likely for Pixel 7: Reports – Times of India

The future Pixel 7 is expected to feature a 2nd-gen Google Tensor processor, reports 9to5Google. The recently launched Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro introduced Google’s own Tensor chipsets. These new chips were created with an assist from Samsung and are optimised for Google extensive Machine Learning usage. It accelerates existing features and enables things that weren’t possible on any Pixel phone before.
The report adds that ‘Cloudripper’, a new codename related to Pixel was found in the researching apps that are present in the Google Pixel 6. Cloudripper is expected to be the name for the baseboard or developer board that shares common hardware with both the phones, rather than being a codename for the upcoming Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro. A similar codename ‘Slider’ was discovered earlier in 2020 for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
The report also mentioned that Cloudripper can be connected to a 2nd-gen version of Google Tensor chips with the model number ‘GS201’. Comparing it with ‘GS101’ that is present in the Pixel 6, this new chip is a generation upgrade and each year may see the model number go up by 100.
Cloudripper’s inclusion in the Pixel-related apps right now seems like Google might use this 2nd-gen Tensor GS201 chip in its flagship Pixel 7 expected to release in 2022. It is unclear about the enhancements that we should be expecting from the 2nd-gen chip since no hardware details have been confirmed yet.
