Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins is left stricken by ACL tear after collapsing to the ground in a spring training game with nobody near him just a week before MLB’s Opening Day
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins was carted off the field during a spring training game Thursday after tearing the ACL in his left knee while fielding a grounder.
At the top of the second inning against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, the 29-year-old was backing up to play a chopper – a ball that bounces several times or hits the ground surrounding home plate – when the ball popped out of his glove.
Soon after, he fell to the ground and began clutching his left knee.
Teammates gathered around him in concern before he was taken off of the field.
It gives the Phillies a big concern ahead of the new season – Hoskins hit 30 homers with 79 RBIs last season for the reigning National League champions.

Hoskins, who turned 30 last week, hit six homers in Philadelphia’s playoff run last season. The Phillies lost to the Houston Astros in the World Series.
It’s another blow for the Phillies, who will be without top pitching prospect Andrew Painter for another few weeks because of a sprained ligament in his right elbow.
And slugger Bryce Harper isn’t expected back until around the All-Star break after undergoing Tommy John surgery in November.
The Phillies ended up losing to the Tigers on Thursday, 1-4. The team will continue its Spring Training by taking on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.
Philadelphia will travel down south to play the Texas Rangers on Opening Day, on March 30.
