Peter Crouch questions point of Tottenham being in Champions League after woeful exit

Peter Crouch has questioned the point of Tottenham being in the Champions League after their woeful exit to AC Milan. 

Spurs were held to a goalless draw on the night, unable to turn around a 1-0 deficit to the Serie A side from the first-leg.

Antonio Conte’s side struggled to create chances, while their misery was compounded by Cristian Romero being sent off for a second bookable offence with over ten minutes left to play.

Tottenham are in a fierce battle to make next season’s tournament, currently sitting in fourth place and hoping to see off both Liverpool and Newcastle.

Former Spurs striker Crouch though questioned the point of Tottenham being in the competition, and said that he wouldn’t ‘begrudge’ Harry Kane if he wanted to leave this summer.

He told BT Sport: ‘What’s the point of the top four if you’re going to perform like this in the Champions League? The fans want to see a trophy.

‘So to rest players for that FA Cup game, it was for the league and then they lose the league game.’

Questions will likely heighten around Kane’s future at the club, with the England captain still yet to win a trophy.

Manchester United are said to be interested in the 29-year-old, who is out of contract in 2024. 

With talks that Conte could leave the club in the summer, Tottenham could be in for another transitional period if they have to look for a new manager.

Crouch says he wouldn’t fault Kane if he wants to get a move away.

He said: ‘How many transitional periods is Harry Kane going to have to wait for? 

‘It’s a short career, I don’t think anyone could begrudge Harry Kane if he wasn’t to move. AC Milan were comfortable tonight.’
