Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola expressed his anger and frustration at seeing Phil Foden’s second half effort against Liverpool chalked off by a VAR intervention.
Foden thought he had given City the lead early on in a pulsating second period at Anfield only to see referee Anthony Taylor go to the monitor and adjudge Erling Haaland to have fouled Fabinho in the build up.
Speaking after the game, a clearly furious Guardiola appeared to blame the officials for his side’s defeat.
Pep Guardiola was left infuriated by the coaching staff after VAR intervention in second half
‘This is Anfield. The referee spoke with my assistants and said he’s not going to make fouls unless they’re clear, all game was play on play on play on,’ he said. ‘Except the goal, we scored and after it’s not play on.’
Guardiola, who tends to remain reserved post-match even if he disagrees with a refereeing call, went further in his comments.
‘When I arrive here it says, “this is Anfield”. Many many years we come here, many many, many. We lost because we made a mistake against an exceptional team,’ he said.
‘But more today it was play on play on play but when we score a goal it’s not play on. That’s true, this is reality.’
Guardiola appeared incredulous at the VAR decision to disallow Phil Foden’s strike in the second half
Guardiola’s counterpart Jurgen Klopp was left equally incredulous at the refereeing, with the German being sent to the stands late on in the game after berating the assistant referee for not awarding Mo Salah a foul.
‘In the end, probably deserved, but you cannot have this situation. It is the clearest foul I ever saw in front of the linesman and he is not bothered,’ Klopp said of his sending off.
‘It is clear. They just watch the game but we [the managers] are involved.’
The result means City’s unbeaten start to the campaign is over as Guardiola’s team are left four points off the top following Arsenal’s win at Leeds earlier on Sunday afternoon.
