Paul Scholes insists Bruno Fernandes shouldn’t be Man United’s long-term captain

‘Going for trophies, a captain with less emotion might be better’: Bruno Fernandes is NOT the long-term solution as Manchester United captain, insists Paul Scholes after his Anfield antics

  • Bruno Fernandes struggled to control his emotions at Anfield on Sunday
  • The Portuguese star has been criticised for his behaviour during the game
  • Paul Scholes thinks Man United should look for a different long-term captain

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United need a less emotional captain than Bruno Fernandes if they are to battle for major silverware in the future.

Fernandes has been widely criticised for his behaviour during United’s humbling 7-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday, but he has been backed to keep the armband by manager Erik ten Hag when club captain Harry Maguire is not on the pitch.

Scholes is not convinced Fernandes is the right man for the job, though.

‘Your captain has to be an influence, leader, calm characters. I’d be concerned if United, March, April are going for the title – i don’t think him as your captain would be ideal,’ Scholes told BT Sport ahead of United’s game with Real Betis on Thursday night.

‘He’s only vice-captain at the moment as Maguire’s not playing. Going forward, bigger games, going for trophies, Champions League finals, a captain with less emotion might be better.’
