Patrick Mahomes reacts to Josh Gordon joining the Chiefs
There have been mixed feelings with regard to how Josh Gordon will fit in with the Kansas City Chiefs when he makes his return to the gridiron. Patrick Mahomes made it clear he is quite happy the wide receiver is on his team.
“Everywhere he’s been, he’s kind of dominated,” Mahomes said Wednesday via ESPN. “He’s a big receiver. Even if he’s covered, he’s not covered. You can kind of throw it up there and he can make plays.”
Gordon hasn’t run a route since 2019, He has been suspended multiple times for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy and then being unable to follow the rules leading up to potential reinstatement.
Head coach Andy Reid already said it will take some time to get the 30-year-old wideout into game shape, but Mahomes is confident he’ll be in the mix soon.
“I’m sure they’ll incorporate him with a couple roles in the offense as the season goes on, as we get him up to speed, and we’ll see where that takes us,” Mahomes said. “He’ll have his role. He’s a great football player, but in this offense, everybody gets a chance to make plays.”
The Chiefs are coming off of a disappointing 30-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in which their wide receivers were heavily stymied. Lining Gordon up with Tyreek Hill can no doubt give the reigning AFC champs an offensive boost, especially with the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills coming up on the schedule in two weeks’ time.
Gordon is starting out on the Chiefs’ practice squad, officially joining the team just a couple of days after being reinstated.
