Panel: What is your favourite heavyweight fight involving a British boxer and why? – Boxing News
This week’s panellists were asked to name their number one heavyweight fight involving a British boxer
Chris Billam-Smith (European cruiserweight champion)
I’d probably go with one containing two British fighters and that’s Lennox Lewis vs. Frank Bruno. It was a great fight between two great jabbers; a high energy fight with bragging rights for the winner.
Ryan Walsh (Former British featherweight champion)
David Haye vs. Dereck Chisora. It had all the pre-fight drama and was a precursor for the stadium era we are in today. My brother, Liam, boxed on the undercard, and all the BBBC licence members who participated risked their licences. I’m a huge “Del Boy” fan so I was surprised and gutted to see him knocked out. Oh, and it also rained, prompting David Haye to wear trainers. It had a bit of everything.
Dave Allen (Heavyweight contender)
My favourite has to be Tyson Fury vs. Wladimir Klitschko. I remember returning home from sparring Wlad and was then in the gym with Tyson in Bolton. I said to him, “One hundred per cent, you beat Wladimir.” He looked at me, smiled, and said, “I know.” He then went over there 10 months later and did the job.
Jason Cunningham (European super-bantamweight champion)
The one I had most interest in was Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder 1. Both were brilliant at promoting it in the buildup, especially Tyson. Plus, you had the story of him battling all his demons to then getting back fighting fit and going up against a devastating puncher like Wilder for the ultimate prize. All their fights were a decent watch.
