One thing is clear, the queering of fashion is no trend at Palomo Spain. In fact the brands that are starting to mine this area can do so in part because of Palomo, who recounts the following.
“I remember coming here for the first time to do the show; we saw like 50 models. We fitted them in little feather dresses and all that. We were so happy to have had the pictures taken and put on the wall, and then at 11 at night, all the agents were calling saying, ‘These models are not doing your show. They didn’t feel comfortable in the clothes. They didn’t feel comfortable wearing heels, we don’t want these models to look this way, blah, blah, blah.’ And we found ourselves desperately looking for new models and doing fittings with them at 6:00 AM the morning before the show. And now, it’s amazing, I can see how proud the models feel when they work for us, whatever their sexuality or gender identities. Now we have straight models, the gays, non-binary—everyone—but they all live happily in the universe. And I can see their proud faces when they walk and when we put on their clothes and when they come back from the runway, they all feel great. You know, that is a major change.”
