Oxford United are looking to bring in Charlton boss Dean Holden after sacking Karl Robinson

Oxford United target Dean Holden to fill the managerial role of sacked Karl Robinson – with Charlton boss’ deal set to expire at the end of the season and talks over a new one currently in limbo

  • Oxford United currently sit 17th in League One after nine games without a win
  • They are eyeing Charlton boss Dean Holden to try and turn things around
  • It comes after Karl Robinson was sacked by the Us after five years in charge

Oxford United look set to approach Charlton Athletic for manager Dean Holden.

The 43-year old is on a contract until the end of the season and Charlton have been looking to offer new terms and extend his deal after an encouraging start to his tenure at The Valley.

However, ongoing conjecture over Charlton’s ownership has left negotiations at a standstill while the club’s future is ratified.

Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard spoke openly about handing Holden a new deal last week. Sandgaard though is also having to contend with a potential legal threat from former Sunderland owner Charlie Methven as he pushes to get his consortium’s takeover bid back on track.

In the meantime, ambitious Oxford have identified Holden as a leading candidate for their managerial vacancy after parting ways with Karl Robinson last week.

Holden is regarded as a young, bright thinking coach who has galvanised Charlton’s dressing room during difficult times off the pitch.

Despite assistant coach Scott Marshall leaving last week, Holden has maintained harmony among the playing staff and developed a bright playing style which has earned plaudits from rival coaches such as Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag.

He has recently been linked with jobs in the championship despite only being at Charlton since December and Oxford are now considering a move of their own.

The League One club are 17th in the table and eager to arrest their slide with grand ambitions to push the club up to the next level, they want a manager who can fulfil their aspirations.

That has been underlined by their plans to move into a new 18,000 capacity stadium with talks underway. They can ill afford to drop into League Two.
