Oteyza Madrid Spring 2022 Collection

“I have hated Bermuda shorts my whole life,” said Paul García de Oteyza, co-founder of Spanish brand Oteyza along with partner Caterina Pañeda. “That’s why I decided to incorporate them into this collection: because I wanted to create the perfect ones.” Those shorts weren’t the only unexpected news from Oteyza’s latest collection, El Caminante, presented at Madrid Fashion Week. Sweatshirts, sneakers, and even materials such as neoprene moved the brand in a more casual direction.

“We like to think that our collections flow and this is the logical continuum of our previous one. We keep experimenting with streetwear and even though we keep our essence, there is a more urban and relaxed feeling to this one,” the designer said. In that spirit, Oteyza’s capes were transformed into deconstructed, functional, poncho-like trenches.

With this casual spirit in mind, the collection was shown in an informal venue: a traditional Madrid farmers’ market. “We didn’t know this mercado before, but when we found it we just thought it was perfect,” said García de Oteyza. “We are deeply rooted in Madrid and we love how this place shows a different perspective and a more realistic approach to the city.”

The market is full of colors, including the collection’s palette of green, white, salmon, and mustard. “We have also gone for a black and white mix that might not seem very summery, but I think it works thanks to elements like the horizontal stripes or the espadrilles, which always make everything better,” said Pañeda. “They are just so traditional, but so urban at the same time,” she added. Just like Oteyza itself.
