Opposition leaders arrive in Patna to chart roadmap for 2024 polls | Updates

In one of the largest gatherings of its kind in recent years, the meeting of the opposition today is set to bring together 18 opposition parties. On Thursday, several opposition parties arrived in Patna, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Jayant Chaudhary decided to skip the conclave due to a ‘pre-decided family program’.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti were among the leaders who reached Patna ahead of the meeting. The Opposition picked Patna as a venue for its meeting as it represents the 1974 call of total revolution by Jayaprakash Narayan that toppled Indira Gandhi’s majority government.

Former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav reached Bihar’s Patna to attend the Opposition leaders’ meeting.

– Ahead of the meet, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge addressed party workers’s in Patna. Rahul Gandhi said BJP is working to spread hate, violence and break the country. “We are working to spread love and unite. Opposition parties have come here today and together we will defeat BJP. There is a war of ideology going on in India. On one side is Congress party’s ‘Bharat Jodo’ ideology and on the other RSS and BJP’s ‘Bharat Todo’ ideology …Congress party’s DNA is in Biha, Gandhi said.

– Congress leaders welcome party president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi arrive in Bihar’s Patna to attend the Opposition leaders’ meeting. Before leaving for Patna, Kharge said that a decision on whether to oppose the Centre’s ordinance on the control of administrative services in Delhi would be taken before the Parliament session.

– The opposition BJP took a jibe at Rahul Gandhi and called him ‘real life Devdas’ in new poster put up outside the BJP office in Patna.

– Speaking on the meeting to be held today, RJD leader Alok Kumar Mehta said, “This meeting is part of India’s democratic system. While speaking to ANI, he said, “This is not a meeting of the country’s opposition, this meeting is for the life and safety of 140 crore people of the country. The meeting is against always looking at Bihar with disrespect and is a good start…Congress is the only party which can defeat BJP, no one can defeat BJP except Congress in the country.”

– BJP MLA in Patna Jeevesh Mishra took a jibe at meeting and said First they should decide who is the actual PM contender among all those who are coming for the opposition meeting in Patna…Everyone is coming here to solve their own problems.

– BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also took a jibe on the opposition meeting. He said, “Nitish Kumar 2024 ke liye baaraat saja rahe hai Patna mai, baaraat me to dulha bhi hota hai, pr is baaraat ka dulha kon hai? (Nitish Kumar is decorating the wedding procession for the 2024 elections in Patna, but who is the groom (PM contender). Everyone is calling themself a PM contender.”

– Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi claimed that the Opposition parties are not united. “Sitting together for tea does not mean that the Opposition is united,” Sushil Modi said ahead of the Opposition meeting.
