Ontario reports 4th daily record with more than 18,400 new COVID cases | Globalnews.ca
Ontario is reporting 18,445 new COVID cases on Saturday, the fourth day in a row the counts continue to break daily records for positive infections. The provincial case total now stands at 774,806.
Some data was released on New Year’s Day by Public Health Ontario, though the provincial government said it would not provide data for the weekend due to the holidays. Full datasets are expected to be released by the provincial government on Tuesday.
However, Public Health Ontario cautions that due to recent changes in testing availability due to the highly infectious Omicron variant that the report is “an underestimate of the true number of individuals with COVID-19 in Ontario. As such, data should be interpreted with caution.”
Saturday’s count edges out record-breaking daily case counts reported on Friday which saw 16,713 new cases, Thursday at 13,807 and Wednesday with 10,436 new infections, as the Omicron variant continues to sweep Ontario.

The seven-day average now stands at 12,496.
The death toll in Ontario has risen to 10,206 as 12 more deaths were recorded.
Resolved cases increased by 4,769 from the previous day. There have been a total of 652,114 recoveries.
For the regional breakdown, 4,721 cases were recorded in Toronto, 1,730 in Peel Region, 1,711 in York Region, 1,482 in Ottawa, 1,032 in Hamilton, and 922 in Durham Region. All other local public health units reported fewer than 900 new cases in the provincial report.
Testing volume or positivity data, hospitalizations, active cases, vaccinations, or the vaccination status for cases and hospitalizations was not available.
