Onir roots for Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkummar Rao‘s ‘Badhaai Do’, says ‘at least some in uniform can be shown as homosexual’ – Times of India

Filmmaker Onir took to his Twitter handle and praised Harshvardhan Kulkarni’s upcoming film ‘Badhaai Do’ starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar in a lavender marriage.

Reacting to the trailer of the film, Onir wrote, “At least some in uniform can be shown as homosexual. Looking forward to what looks like a fun film directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni. Congratulations @RajkummarRao @bhumipednekar for stepping into and celebrating the beautiful queer. #PRIDE.”

The makers had unveiled a promising trailer of ‘Badhaai Do’ on Tuesday where Rajkummar is seen essaying the role of a cop, while Bhumi will be seen as a PT teacher. Sharing the trailer on social media, the actors had said, “It’s one of those films, that came our way, touched our hearts in ways we can’t explain. Some journeys are meant to be remembered forever. Ab aap dekho trailer aur hume #BadhaaiDo ❤ ???????? #BadhaaiDoInTheatres on the 11th of February”. The film will hit the theatres on February 11.

Only a few days ago, Onir made headlines when his upcoming film script was rejected by the Ministry of Defence. Based on the real-life story of a gay Major J Suresh, who quit the Army as it was no longer plausible for him to come out as a homosexual and remain in the Indian Army.

While Onir had sent his film for approval before hitting the shooting floors in March, the script was not approved by the officials. Talking about it, a disappointed Onir told TOI, “Ahead of the celebrations of the 75th year of our independence, I am very disappointed with this rejection. Film-makers are supposed to question through cinema. This attempt to stop dialogue is unfortunate. True democracy does not exist unless it applies equally to all citizens irrespective of gender, sexuality, caste, class or religion.”

Reportedly, the said rejected film script is the sequel of Onir’s hit film ‘I Am’.
