On the Podcast: Dispatch From Paris Fashion Week
I still remember the cobalt blue cover and curling script title of Mireille Guiliano’s 2004 bestseller French Women Don’t Get Fat, just another entry in the pantheon of “How to get French girl style” for Francophile Americans. But maybe now is the time to rethink the strict ideals of la femme française. Enter Ester Manas, a Franco-Belgian clothing label that designs slinky, ruched frocks for a variety of shapes and silhouettes. In fact, the eponymous Ester and Balthazar Delepierre, her partner in life and love, both moonlight as fit models for their brand. We caught up with the pair ahead of their show, titled “For Better or For Worse”; staged in a church, it will act as a dress rehearsal for their actual wedding in the Belgian countryside this summer. Wait until you hear me and Chioma squeal with delight when they tell us about their nuptials.
With Chioma’s chair empty, the podcast studio was lonely this week. She called in from her room at the Hotel Regina overlooking the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, catching us up on all the best shows: what she’s loved (Dior), what she expects to love (Chanel), and what everyone’s eager to see (Balenciaga). Another of her favorite shows was Balmain, and we chatted with designer Olivier Rousteing on the heels of his presentation, which was more intimate than past blockbuster productions. Rousteing opened up to us about the racism he has faced in the fashion industry, his enduring love for Beyoncé, his grandmother’s innate sense of style, and the life-threatening burn accident that made him rethink the need to be perfect on social media. As Chioma may say from Paris, bon appetit!
