Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man United project is ‘taking TOO LONG’, insists Bastian Schweinsteiger

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man United project is ‘taking TOO LONG’, insists Bastian Schweinsteiger… as former man hits out at lack of ‘strategy and DNA’ after Liverpool mauling

  • Manchester United sit seventh in the table after humbling Liverpool defeat
  • Under-fire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to fight on at Old Trafford
  • The Norwegian has assembled a star-studded squad plagued by inconsistency
  • And Bastian Schweinsteiger believes Solskjaer’s project is taking too much time

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s project at Manchester United is not delivering results quickly enough, according to the club’s former midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

United added the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho to their squad in the summer, but they currently sit seventh in the Premier League table with three defeats after their thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday.

Solskjaer however vowed to fight on following the Red Devils’ 5-0 reverse at Old Trafford, despite having the shortest odds with the bookmakers that he has been to leave the club in what is currently his third full season in charge.

But ex-Bayern Munich and Germany star Schweinsteiger believes Chelsea’s dramatic turnaround under compatriot Thomas Tuchel to become European champions last season shows United’s process is too slow.

‘United are still a work in progress, Solskjaer keeps mentioning that,’ Schweinsteiger – who scored two goals in 35 United appearances between 2015 and 2017 – told BBC Radio 5 Live via Goal.

‘It takes too long though for me in my eyes. If you look at [Manchester] City or Chelsea and the impact that Tuchel had on them – it was unbelievable. They have a strategy and a DNA. They have more in their game.

‘When I watch United games I don’t know how they play. I can’t guarantee you a win and as a Manchester United fan you want to know that.

‘They keep talking about time, but you don’t have time in football. You have to win right now.’

The 2014 World Cup winner believes Ronaldo and Varane’s experience will continue to make a positive impact on the side, and believes Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford will also make their mark.

But Schweinsteiger stopped short of believing United will return to competing for the Premier League title with Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the immediate future under this project.

‘It is still not 100 per cent clear to me if United are going to be successful or not,’ Schweinsteiger added.

‘It has not been easy for them. They have great names like Pogba and Ronaldo, and I think that Rashford will help them a lot in the future.

‘The experience of Ronaldo and Raphael Varane will definitely help the team, but the question is how much are they involved in the tactics of the team.’

Schweinsteiger insists his side have to start winning right away, but they are currently in the midst of a nightmare run of fixtures.

Following their defeats against Leicester and Liverpool, United face Tottenham next before the Manchester derby at the start of next month.

Watford, Chelsea and Arsenal then see them into early December, with Champions League group stage outings at Atalanta and Villarreal also featuring.

And Solskjaer’s former team-mate Mark Bosnisch believes the Norwegian has just three games to save his job, the last of which is against Pep Guardiola’s champions in their next game at Old Trafford.
