Oklahoma football: Cale Gundy’s daughter calls out Brent Venables for father’s resignation
Cale Gundy resigning from the Oklahoma football coaching staff has sparked a ton of drama in the Sooners program, which now involves Brent Venables.
It’s not been the prettiest of days for Oklahoma football with the start of the regular season fast approaching. Monday began with the shocking resignation of longtime wide receivers coach Cale Gundy after he admitted to reading aloud a racially charged slur in front of the Sooners players in a team meeting.
Later in the day, though, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables released a statement condemning Gundy’s actions but also seemingly refuting the resigned position coach’s account of the matter as he said that Gundy uttered the slur on multiple occasions.
But now there’s another layer to this as Gundy’s daughter has now taken to Twitter and has seemingly called out Venables, claiming that the first-year head coach told his players to keep their mouths shut about the issue before claiming “the truth will always come to fruition.”
Oklahoma football: Cale Gundy’s daughter calls out Brent Venables
Frankly, this is not the type of fun-loving calamity that we want to see from college football. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
This is an ugly scene in Norman and one that doesn’t make anyone look good. There are so many accounts of what happened regarding Gundy’s use of a slur at this point, including multiple high-profile former Sooners stepping up and speaking out in the wide receivers coach’s defense, that it’s hard to know what to think, especially with the daughter’s refute of Venables’ statement now.
Regardless, this is certainly not how Venables imagined his first preseason would go with the Sooners and how he handles the situation both externally and internally will be well worth monitoring given all that’s already come out.
