Ohio State AD proposes revolutionary (and brilliant) idea to remake college football

With all of the talk about college football being in trouble, it looks like Ohio State AD Gene Smith has a pretty intriguing idea to help the sport.

As the college football world argues and debates about a number of different topics, it seems as if many are trying to figure out the best way forward for everybody in the sport.

It is currently unclear as to how everyone will end up navigating the current circumstance college football finds itself in as some are displeased with the current state of the sport, but a number of different ideas have been recently proposed to help everyone move ahead.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith apparently has a fairly intriguing idea as the leader of the Buckeyes believes there is a pretty easy path forward for the 10 FBS conferences.

According to a report by ESPN’s Heather Dinich, Smith’s idea includes having the “FBS conferences operate under the umbrella of the College Football Playoff” and letting the NCAA take care of championships for the other sports, such as basketball.

In Dinich’s report, she notes that Smith discusses everything from creating a governing body to rule creation and enforcement to providing medical care for injured athletes.

“That might be in the medical space, for example, if a student-athlete is injured and hurt in his or her senior year,” Smith said. “You take care of them when they’re done until they’re healed.”

According to ESPN, Smith says there is currently the funding available to do stuff like this for those injured players.

“As we consider expansion, we ought to consider the structure,” Smith explained. “The reality is we need to begin to control our own space. We’ve got to make sure we’re careful with antitrust, but at the end of the day, we need different rules.”

The idea of examining all of this as a discussion is held around expanding the College Football Playoff is interesting. These are definitely ideas that are worth exploring. Though it seems unlikely that this is the exact sort of plan that could get adopted, it’s definitely something that has to be considered.
