Ohara ‘Two Tanks’ Davies joins the ranks at Golden Boy Promotions | Boxing News
IN a surprise move Ohara ‘Two Tanks’ Davies has signed a promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions.
The British super-lightweight 25-2 (18) is the mandatory challenger for Rolando Romero’s WBA strap and now has the backing of Oscar De La Hoya and co. to help him secure the fight.
Davies, one of UK boxing’s most polarising characters in recent years, is something of a success story following his controversial departure from Matchroom Boxing in 2018.
In December 2017 Davies was suspended by then promoter Eddie Hearn following a tweet made by the Londoner. The social media post was sent to Tommy Coyle with both due to fight one another on February 3, 2018. Davies suggested he would beat the popular Hull boxer and then do an interview with his “favourite newspaper” The Sun.
Due to the infamous tabloid’s coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster where 97 people lost their lives Davies’ tweet sparked outrage amongst the Liverpool boxing community. His suspension eventually led to a dismissal.
Since then, the 31-year-old has gone on to climb the WBA rankings and his ninth-round knockout of Lewis Ritson in March paved the way for a fight against Romero.
“Golden Boy is up there with the biggest promotional companies in the world of boxing, so I’m over the moon to sign a promotional deal with them,” Davies said. “Also, to work with (Golden Boy CEO) Oscar De la Hoya, who was one of my childhood boxing heroes is great, and to be able to link up and win my first world title under him as my promoter is amazing.
“I’m going to be looking to make a statement and knock Rolly Romero out. From then on, I’ll be looking for the biggest names possible and being signed with Oscar De La Hoya, I believe they will deliver on that.”
De La Hoya added: “We are in the business of making world champions, and we will make Ohara Davies one of them under our promotional family.
“He has the grit, determination and bad blood against Romero to fuel him as he campaigns for the WBA world title very soon.”
