Official: PSG confirm Lionel Messi’s departure from club; ends two-year spell in French capital

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the departure of legendary Argentine star Lionel Messi on Thursday, June 1 after a two-year spell in the French capital. Messi, who led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, had fuelled speculations regarding his departure from the club having made a trip to Saudi Arabia without informing the club in April. Coach Christophe Galtier was full of praise for the legendary star as PSG close their domestic season on Saturday against eighth place Clermont Foot at home.

Messi’s departure confirmed

“I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. It will be Leo’s last match at the Parc des Princes against Clermont,” the PSG coach said in the final pre-match press conference of the 2022-23 season.

Messi has been consistently linked with a move away from the club ever since returning from the World Cup in Qatar. It is understood Messi wanted to take a decision on his future shortly after his father Jorge, confirmed his desire to leave the French capital. While it is not decided where Messi will go next season, Barcelona remain one of the many names in the hat while Saudi side Al-Hilal are rumoured to be the front runners for his signature.

The Argentina star is also reported to have attracted interest from David Beckham’s co-owned Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Start of breaking point with PSG

Lionel Messi’s future at PSG was plunged into doubt early in May after he was suspended by Paris Saint-Germain after travelling to Saudi Arabia without the club’s permission. While Messi returned to the club after serving the suspension, the idea was always to end the season at PSG and search for a new club.

Messi’s options for next club

According to reports, Messi still sees his future in Europe and is ready to entertain offers in the coming days. Barcelona, struggling with Financial Fair Play (FFP) are one of the favourites while Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Chelsea remain the only clubs able to afford Messi’s salary in European football.

Al-Hilal, have reportedly put forward a €400 million proposal in salary for Messi, which might tempt him to sign for the Saudi club.
