Obscenity case against Shilpa Shetty dismissed by Mumbai court – Times of India

Tuesday brought some relief for Shilpa Shetty as a sessions court in Mumbai dismissed an obscenity case against the actress for an event that took place over a decade ago.

Back in 2007, when Richard Gere was in the country for an AIDS awareness program, the actor had kissed Shilpa publicly. This led to many cases being filed against the two actors, against Shilpa and Richard under the sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

Under Supreme Court’s order, the case was moved to Mumbai and in January 2022, the Metropolitan Magistrate discharged the case after observing that Shilpa seemed to be a victim of Gere’s act. But Rajasthan police filed an appeal against this dismissal, while Shilpa’s lawyer Prashant Patil asked for dismissal of the appeal. And on Monday morning Mumbai sessions court dismissed the criminal revision filed by the state. Hopefully ending the 16 year old case. When this incident had occurred, there were reportedly nationwide protests against the two actors and their effigies were burnt on the streets.
Shilpa Shetty will soon be seen in an action packed avatar in Rohit Shetty helmed Indian Police Force. This web series also features Siddharth Malhotra and Vivek Oberoi in lead roles. Besides this show, Shilpa has also signed up for ‘KD- The Devil’, wherein she will be essaying the role of Satyavati. The film also stars Dhruva Sarja, Shilpa Shetty, V Ravichandran and Sanjay Dutt.
