nvidia: Explained: What is the new Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution tech and how it can be useful – Times of India

Dynamic Super Resolution or DSR is a tech developed by Nvidia that can give 4K-quality graphics even on your HD screen. So, if your graphics card is capable of running a game at 4K but you have a 1440p monitor, you can use this tech to get better visuals.
If the game supports 4K, this tech renders that game at a higher more detailed resolution and again shrinks the result down to the resolution that your monitor supports. This helps in getting sharper images but might cause a dip in performance as you will be asking your GPU to do more work.
Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution (DLDSR)
This tech has been there for a long time and the company has now developed a more improved version of the same tech that they are including in their latest drivers. The company claims that users can use this tech to make ‘most games’ look sharper by running them at a higher resolution than the monitor natively supports. This new tech is called the Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution or DLDSR.
What is DLDSR?
The tech uses the same concept of DSR and adds the AI that works to enhance the visuals. The company also claims that this tech won’t upscale the original resolution much`to get better performance, yet users will be able to get similar improvement in image quality. It means that the image quality that DSR produces running at four times the resolution will be similar to the image quality the DLDSR will produce running at 2.25 times.
Although, these results are just Nvidia’s claims and the company is yet to demonstrate one of the best-case scenarios. It is possible for users to get different FPS results in different games depending on the settings in which they are running the DLDSR. Users will be able to experiment with it in one of their favourite older titles, considering the wide game support, but users will still need Nvidia’s RTX graphics card to use it.
Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS)
Nvidia has used deep learning to improve performance and image quality earlier. The company also got a lot of praise for the Deep Learning Super Sampling or DLSS system. This is a machine-learning and spatial image upscaling technology that uses information from past frames to produce the current frame to lower the workload of the GPU. This tech is limited to select titles like the God of War and it is used in very few games.
Rival technology
Nvidia’s competitor AMD has also announced its technology to improve graphics and performance in several games. The name AMD uses for its technology is Radeon Super Resolution. It doesn’t exactly use the same technology as DLSS or DLDSR but it is aimed towards the same goal. AMD has its own upscaling tech called the virtual super resolution.
How to use DLDSR?
To use Nvidia’s DLDSR users have to update to the latest driver and open the Nvidia Control Panel app. Then, go to the Manage 3D settings and click on DSR. Then select one of the DL Scaling options from the drop-down menu.
