NRL 2021: Marshall weighs up future

Benji Marshall’s wife has paid tribute to her “bloody inspirational” husband in an emotional post as the South Sydney veteran weighs up retirement.

Marshall’s wife, Zoe, took to Facebook on Monday to thank a range of people following a challenging season amid a Covid-19 pandemic.

She reserved special praise for her husband, who excelled in his 19th NRL season despite narrowly missing out on his second premiership.

“I’m so proud Benji Marshall and the way you have played this year,” Zoe said about Benji, who was a late arrival in the Bunnies’ Gold Coast-based bubble due to the birth of the couple’s second child, baby girl Ever J.

“You are a bloody inspiration. All class. I’m proud of us for making it this far. Quarantine, lockdown, new babies, preschoolers, two places to move into, no washing machine for two weeks with kids.

“It’s been an incredible season for South Sydney and not even last night can take that away.

“This club has become a family to Benji Marshall and myself – friends for life.”

Mrs Marshall’s high praise comes as her husband considers continuing his stellar career next season.

The 36-year-old has been linked to a stint with the Gold Coast Titans, but the veteran playmaker insists he remains undecided about his next move.

It follows reports Marshall told Souths teammates after the Penrith loss that he will retire at season’s end to spend more time with his family.

The man himself, though, was giving little away when asked after the grand final loss on Sunday night.

Marshall also said he wouldn’t seek Bennett’s ear about his future despite the duo’s close relationship.

“No, whatever I think is best,” Marshall said.

“I think that I’ll know in the bottom of my heart if it is time or not.

“My wife is very supportive, and she wants me to do what is best. We will see. It is hard to proper process after that sort of year.

“See what the options are in the next couple of days. Celebrate with the boys. It was tough to lose but we had a pretty good season. See what happens.”

Marshall’s wife also paid tribute to veteran Souths coach Wayne Bennett for giving Benji a lifeline at the Rabbitohs when he couldn’t secure another NRL deal.

“And to Wayne (who will never see this, so I will send another cake) thanks for believing in my man,” she said.

“That’s twice you’ve saved him now – we won’t forget that.”
