Discussions about Christophe Soumillon’s future as retained jockey to the powerful Aga Khan string will take place on Monday after the 10-time French champion jockey shocked the racing world by elbowing fellow rider Rossa Ryan off his mount at Saint-Cloud on Friday.
Princess Zara, the Aga Khan’s daughter, confirmed that her father’s team will discuss the situation after Soumillon had won the Prix Wildenstein on Erevann on day one of the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe meeting at Longchamp.
Princess Zara said: ‘We will talk to Christophe on Monday. Obviously it is an unconscionable and unthinkable thing to happen, so as a team we are going to have a proper conversation about what to do.’
Friday’s incident was covered by Sportsmail, and was quickly followed by Soumillon’s grovelling apology. He was banned for two months, despite the risks Ryan faced when falling from the horse at 35 miles per hour, including death or serious injury.
Ryan was left uninjured as a result of Friday’s fall, but some believed the France-Galop stewards were too lenient by only installing a 60-day ban from racing, which begins on October 12, and left Soumillon free to race in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.
Soumillon will ride Vadeni in the feature race, which takes place at 3.05pm UK time on Sunday afternoon.
