Now a millionaire, this cricketer used to sell pani puri once to earn livelihood
Indian Premier League (IPL) has changed the fortunes of many young Indian and foreign players, who come from humble backgrounds but made a name for themselves in age-group tournaments and have risen through the ranks purely on their talent and ability.
One of them is the 19-year old boy, Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal arrived on the cricketing scene in 2018 when at the age of 17 he smashed a double hundred in the youth one-day match. Jaiswal comes from a humble background and at one point in his life used to sell pani puri and fruits outside Azad Maidan in Mumbai to earn a livelihood and even slept empty stomach. Born in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi village, Jaiswal moved to Mumbai at the age of 11 to fulfill his dreams of becoming a cricketer.
Jaiswal, who lived in tents during his training years has gone through a huge struggle in life to make it to the top and he was one of the stories of India’s Under-19 World Cup 2020 campaign and very few know about what he has gone through in his life. Jaiswal was noticed by coach Jwala Singh at Azad Maidan, which is when his career just took off.
Jaiswal amassed 400 runs in the U-19 World Cup including one century and four fifties. Jaiswal was named ‘Player of the tournament’ for his fabulous performance through the tournament and the then 18-year old reaped the benefits of the same in the auction for the 2020 edition of the IPL.
Jaiswal was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for INR 2.4 crore. Jaiswal only got three games in the 2020 edition, but the Royals retained him for the next season and under new skipper Sanju Samson, Jaiswal got more opportunities to showcase his talent and the 19-year old impressed one and all with his majestic strokeplay and intent whether against pace or spin.
In six games he has played till now, Jaiswal has scored 156 runs striking at 138 while opening alongside Jos Buttler in the first half and Evin Lewis in the second half in the UAE.
