Notre Dame ‘hires Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry to take over the Fighting Irish’s basketball’

Notre Dame ‘hires Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry to take over the Fighting Irish’s basketball program’ after leading the Nittany Lions to their first tournament berth in 11 years

Penn State men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry is leaving State College, Pennsylvania for Notre Dame, according to multiple reports.

Shrewsberry will be taking over the Fighting Irish after the retirement of Mike Brey – who had been in charge of Notre Dame since 2000.

The Indiana-native will return to his home state – going to South Bend after a combined 14 seasons worth of head coaching and assistant coaching jobs in the Hoosier State.

As a kid, Shrewsberry attended Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and played college basketball at the D-III level at Hanover College.

After the end of his playing days, he spent a year as an assistant coach at D-III Wabash and then stayed at that level for two years with DePauw University.

Following that, Shrewsberry had a brief spell as the Director of Basketball Operations for Marshall University in West Virginia – before being hired as the head coach of the NAIA affiliated Indiana University South Bend.

From there, he joined the staff of current Celtics general manager Brad Stevens while he was the head coach at Butler. Shrewsberry was on the Bulldogs’ staff for two runs at the national title where they fell to Duke in 2010 and UConn in 2011.

After that, Shrewsberry spent two seasons as an assistant at Purdue before following Stevens to the Boston Celtics. Afterwards, he returned to Purdue for an additional two seasons from 2019-2021.

Shrewsberry then got his first Division I coaching gig with the struggling Penn State Nittany Lions – who hadn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since the 2010-11 season. Not only that, but Penn State hadn’t won a game in March Madness since 2001 – when then-head coach Jerry Dunn had a magical run to the Sweet 16.

After struggling to a 14-17 record in his first season, Shrewsberry put up a record of 23-14 this year and took Penn State to the tournament. There, they won their Round of 64 game against Texas A&M before falling in the Round of 32 to Texas.

While Brey is regarded as a coaching legend among Notre Dame fans, he had only won two NCAA tournament games in the past seven seasons – putting up a record of 107-103 in that time.

It’s a far cry from the back-to-back Elite Eight appearances Brey had in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. The luck of the Irish ran out in 2015 against Kentucky and then again in 2016 against North Carolina.
