‘Not Modiji’s Grihapravesh’: TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Parliament inauguration

In a joint statement 19 Opposition parties of India including Congress, TMC, NCP, AAP, RJD, JD-U, National Conference, and left parties announced their collective decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on 28 May. While speaking upon her party’s decision, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra accused the government of ignoring the constitutional niceties and said this is not PM Modi’s ‘Grihapravesh.’

“President of India is Number 1 in warrant of precedence, VP is Num 2 & Prime Minister is 3rd. Govt ignorant about constitutional niceties. This is NOT Modiji’s Grihapravesh for house that he built with his own money. @AITCofficial not attending May 28th party. Good luck to BJP,” TMC MP Mahua Moitra said.

The joint statement by the Opposition parties came as they objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to inaugurate the new Parliament. The Opposition parties opined that as the head of the Parliament President Droupadi Murmu should be the one to inaugurate the new Parliament. They alleged that completely sidelining the office of the President on the occasion is not only a “grave insult but a direct assault on our democracy…”

“She summons, prorogues, and addresses the Parliament. She must assent for an Act of Parliament to take effect. In short, the Parliament cannot function without the president. Yet, the prime minister has decided to inaugurate the new Parliament building without her,” the opposition parties said referring to the Article 72 of the constitution.

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the opposition parties are indulging in drama as they opposed the construction of Parliament.

“The boycott is obvious. They opposed the construction of Parliament House. They never thought that the construction will be completed so soon. So, everything has happened like a bouncer for the Opposition. Just to save their face, they are enacting the drama of boycott…Parliament House will open on the day associated with Veer Savarkar. That might be another reason for them to oppose or boycott the function…”
