Not Hardik Pandya, this star cricketer might be Rohit Sharma’s deputy in Asia Cup, World Cup
Hardik Pandya faced defeat in his first bilateral series (T20I) against the West Indies.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is emerging as a strong candidate for the vice-captaincy role in the Indian cricket team. Alongside all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Bumrah is being considered for this position in the upcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup, commencing on October 5th.
While Pandya has already been appointed as the regular T20I captain, Bumrah, who recently returned to international cricket during the ongoing T20I series against Ireland, is expected to provide stiff competition to the dynamic Baroda all-rounder.
“If you look in terms of leadership seniority, Bumrah is ahead of Pandya as he captained the Test team in 2022. He has also been ODI vice-captain before Pandya during the ODI tour of South Africa.
“Don’t be surprised if you see Bumrah being made ODI deputy to Rohit for both Asia Cup and World Cup. There is a reason why he was handed captaincy in Ireland instead of Ruturaj,” a BCCI source in know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Pandya has enjoyed a prosperous tenure as the captain of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Under his leadership, the team achieved remarkable triumph in their inaugural appearance in 2022, clinching the title. They also secured a commendable second-place finish in 2023.
However, many individuals believe that the astute strategist, Ashish Nehra, has played a significant role in the success of the Gujarat Titans as well.
Regarding the Indian team, Pandya faced defeat in his first bilateral series (T20I) against the West Indies. Some of his decisions, such as not utilizing the talents of Axar Patel or introducing Mukesh Kumar at the right moment, were subjected to criticism.
