Sale’s Manu Tuilagi gave the elbow to his hopes of a Six Nations recall when he was red-carded for a brutal hit on Northampton wing Tommy Freeman.
Tuilagi is certain to be given a ban after his dismissal in this hard-fought Premiership game in which late tries by Callum Braley and Fraser Dingwall completed an astonishing Northampton Saints fightback to win 38-34.
Centre Tuilagi boiled over after just 13 minutes when he hit Freeman in the face with his elbow. Tuilagi will be ruled out of the Wales game next Saturday, even if England coach Steve Borthwick had been tempted to pick him.
Northampton fought back from 27-7 down, with Sale outnumbered after Tuilagi’s red and yellow cards for Cobus Wiese and Ewan Ashman
