‘Nobody came to me,’ says Brij Bhushan Singh, denies reports of enquiry

Amid reports of Delhi Police visiting the residence of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with wrestler Sangeeta Phogat for an investigation on Friday, Singh has denied the allegations, stating that nobody came to his place.

When leaving his residence on Friday, Brijbhushan Sharan Singh said, “I was sleeping in my room. Nobody came to my place.”

Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and other wrestlers have been protesting in Delhi since the beginning of the year, demanding the removal and arrest of Singh over accusations of sexual harassment.

On May 28, the wrestlers planned a march and protest near the new Parliament despite Section 144 being imposed in the area. However, they were detained by Delhi Police on their way, and FIRs were filed against them under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 147, 149, 186, 188, 332, 353, Section 3 of the PDPP Act. The protest site was subsequently cleared by the police.

The wrestlers travelled to Haridwar two days later to immerse their medals in the Ganga, following their removal from Jantar Mantar

Following a meeting with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, Bajrang Punia, star Indian wrestler, stated that the government assured them that the ongoing probe by Delhi Police against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh would be completed before June 15.

“An Internal Complaint Committee of the wrestling federation will be constituted. It will be headed by a woman. We have demanded that all FIRs filed against wrestlers be withdrawn,” said Thakur to reporters at his residence after holding parleys with the ace grapplers

The wrestlers urged that Brij Bhushan Singh, who has completed 3 terms (as WFI chief) and his associates not be allowed to stand for re-election after completing three terms as WFI chief. In return, the wrestlers pledged not to hold any further protests before June 15, as stated by Thakur.
