No more free snacks, massages for Google employees: report

Tech giant Google is planning to reduce its expenses by cutting down on the perks offered to employees, such as free snacks, laundry, massages and workout sessions, multiple news reports said.

According to a report by Business Insider, Google CFO Ruth Porat sent a memo to Google employees saying the company would be taking measures such as consolidating some of its micro kitchens.

“We’re adjusting our office services to the new hybrid workweek. Cafes, MicroKitchens and other facilities will be tailored to better match how and when they are being used. Decisions will be based on data. For example, where a cafe is seeing a significantly lower volume of use on certain days, we’ll close it on those days and put more focus instead on popular options that are close by,” said the memo cited by Business Insider.

The memo also mentioned that the company would stop spending on employees’ personal equipment, such as laptops.

It added that funds will be utilised on work that is of a higher priority.

“Because equipment is a significant expense for a company of our size, we’ll be able to save meaningfully here,” Porat wrote in the memo.

The memo added that the company would reduce its hiring pace and reallocate teams to focus on higher-priority work.Google also recently told employees that some workers would have to share desk space, amid plans to downsize some of its offices.

“We’ve been here before. Back in 2008, our expenses were growing faster than our revenue. We improved machine utilization, narrowed our real estate investments, tightened our belt on T&E budgets, cafes, MicroKitchens and mobile phone usage, and removed the hybrid vehicle subsidy,” the memo cited by Business Insider said.

On January 20, Google parent Alphabet announced it would lay off 12,000 employees, representing 6% of its total workforce.

In a note to employees, CEO Sundar Pichai said: “I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI.”

Pichai said the tech giant would “support employees as they look for their next opportunity”.

Google employed around 156,000 people at the end of 2021. A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that the median annual salary at the company was $295,884.
