No, Biden didn’t sniff a baby or fart in these videos

A video showing Joe Biden loudly sniffing a baby was viewed over 1.8 million times on Twitter. Another video on Twitter that shows the American president reportedly farting on stage garnered more than 3 million views. However, the audio on both videos was manipulated. As the candidates begin to ramp up their campaigns ahead of the 2024 presidential elections, Biden’s opposition has been spreading videos that try to discredit the president’s mental sharpness.

  • A video was edited to make it sound like Joe Biden loudly sniffed a baby in the crowd during his visit to Front Liberty, North Carolina, where he gave a speech on June 9
  • Another video was edited to make it sound like the US president farted on stage during a conference on July 7
  • The audio on these videos was altered, and are part of a long list of digital edits that attempt to discredit the president’s mental capacities. Biden’s opposition frequently target his health.

The video of Joe Biden sniffing a baby was edited

“Let me whisper you a secret,” Biden said as he approached the baby held by his mother. We can then hear the president loudly sniffing the baby.

“Watch Joe Biden’s face when the girl’s mother tells him she recorded the ENTIRE thing,” commented @bennyjohnson in the Twitter post published on July 8, which garnered 1.8 million views.

The FRANCE 24 Observers team determined that the sniffing sound was added to the original video published on TikTok by the baby’s mother on June 9.

The video with the hashtag #fortliberty was filmed for the occasion of Biden’s speech in Fort Liberty, North Carolina on June 9, after signing an executive order pledging better economic conditions for the spouses of military personnel.

The mother, whose husband is in the military as revealed by other videos she shared, was smiling as the president approached her child. It seems that Biden thought she was taking a picture when she was actually recording, which seems to have slightly embarrassed him.

This video of him supposedly farting was also modified

A video shared by @JebraFaushay on Twitter shows Biden farting in the middle of his speech. He then apologises with a surprised look on his face, which causes the audience to laugh. The video garnered more than 3 million views.

The compromising sound was in fact edited. In reality, Joe Biden was startled by a feedback issue on his microphone during a conference about lowering healthcare costs in Washington DC on July 7.

@johnhackerla published the edited video for the first time on Twitter on July 7. His profile description says “VIDEO MEME ASSASSIN | VIDEO EDITOR | MEME CREATOR”, which lets on that his content has a comedic purpose.

Furthermore, the website of the White House published Biden’s speech on the same day, July 7.

The accident is visible on the livestream of the event at minute 15:01. The microphone had feedback problems several times during the conference.

Biden’s health, an easy target

Biden began his campaign in June, ahead of the November 2024 US presidential elections.

Republican sympathizers usually target Biden’s health to discredit him. Throughout his presidency, many manipulated videos that question the president’s mental capacities have spread online.

According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll in May, only 32% of respondents thought that Biden had the “mental sharpness” to be an effective president. Biden’s opposition is likely to continue questioning the president’s health, notably through manipulated videos.

The FRANCE 24 Observers has widely covered videos and photos of Biden that were manipulated. Read some more of our articles on this subject below:
