Nitish Kumar will visit Assam next month: AIUDF leader Badaruddin Ajmal

Lok Sabha MP and leader of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Badaruddin Ajmal said that Bihar Chief minister Nitish Kumar who is spearheading the formation of an anti-BJP front for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls will visit Assam next month.

Ajmal while talking to media persons in Guwahati said, “Congress and Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress will be part of the anti-BJP front led by the Bihar chief minister. AIUDF will also join the front.”

Last week AIUDF stated it would be part of the anti-BJP front. Ajmal had said that he has no problem if Congress joins the alliance and it will be part of the alliance for the sake of defeating BJP in the 2024 parliamentary polls.

He said, “In Assam, we have welcomed the all-India Mahagatbandhan (grand alliance). We welcome it. Whatever is the Mahagathbandhan strategy, that is our strategy.”

He added, “Assam Congress has no standing in Assam. Congress has betrayed us. However, all of India we want Congress to come back so that we can counter the BJP.

Last time if we had not supported Congress, they would have lost all seats.”

AIUDF claims that it has not put candidates in five seats in 2019 Lok Sabha allowing Congress party to three seats. In the 2021 assembly polls both parties jointly fought the polls however after polls the alliance was snapped.

Assam has 14 Lok Sabha seats. In 2019 parliamentary polls BJP in Assam increased its tally from seven of 2014 to nine in 2019, across Northeast India BJP which won eight seats in the last parliamentary election increased the seat tally to 14 in 2019. Together with allies, BJP won 18 seats out of 25 seats, the best ever performance of the Saffron party in the region.

While AIUDF won one seat, one seat was won by Independents in Assam. Last month in a rally Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asked the party workers to work for 2024 Lok Sabha polls and ensure that Narendra Modi becomes Prime minister for a third term.

Addressing the party workers rally in Guwahati Sarma said, “We must start working for 2024 Lok Sabha polls and ensure Modi comes back to power for a third term. Out of 14 seats in Assam, our target is to win 12 seats.
