Nikhat Zareen strikes gold again, secures second consecutive World Boxing Championships title

Ace Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Women’s World Boxing Championships title for the second time in a row, held in Delhi on Sunday. In the 50kg fly weight final, she dominated her opponent Nguyen Thi Tam from Vietnam, winning the match 5-0 to retain her World title.

Nikhat’s outstanding performance has set a new benchmark in the boxing world and has made India proud. Her recent victory has propelled her to the list of Indian boxers who have won multiple gold medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships, after legendary MC Mary Kom. Mary Kom has won an impressive six gold medals in her remarkable career spanning from 2002 to 2018. Meanwhile, Nikhat has secured back-to-back World Championships titles in 2022 and 2023.

“I am happy that I became World Champion for the 2nd time. I am grateful to all those who supported me. This medal is for my country India. This was a difficult competition but in the end, I won a gold medal,” said Nikhat Zareen on winning her 2nd Women’s World Boxing Championships gold medal.

Furthermore, on Saturday, Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) and Saweety Boora (81kg) were also crowned as world champions.

India is set to equal their previous record of winning the highest number of gold medals at a sporting event, as they prepare for the boxing finals with Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain.

In the 2006 edition of the tournament, held in India, the country had won four gold medals, which remains their best-ever performance in terms of gold medals, along with a total of eight medals, including a silver. If India wins the boxing final, they will match their 2006 record and create history once again.
