Nicole Ari Parker Talks Joining the the SATC Friend Group

Parker insists choosing a favorite look from Wexley’s wardrobe is impossible, but admits the Park Avenue documentarian’s weakness for bling was among the most enjoyable parts of playing her. “My character has wonderful taste in jewelry—and purses! Molly [Rogers, the show’s costume designer] really did a great job on those things—the accoutrements.”

Being part of a show that puts women who are firmly in mid-life front and center is one of the most exciting parts of joining the cast for the 51-year-old, who recalls an “amazing energy” around New York as filming got underway in the city. “I think that capturing these characters in the next chapter of their lives is fantastic, because it’s dispelling all of those unconscious myths we have,” she says. “People are still having sex, they’re still having nervous breakdowns, they’re still recovering, still falling in love, still starting over, still resurrecting themselves… None of that ever stops in real life, and everyone knows it. But somehow in TV and film it does. So [And Just Like That] is very refreshing.”

Then, of course, there’s the fact that the new cast is noticeably more diverse than that featured in the original Sex and the City, which was criticized for its whitewashed portrayal of one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Producers pledged to address the long-standing issues in the reboot, and in addition to Parker, And Just Like That will introduce Karen Pittman as Dr. Nya Wallace, Sarita Choudhury as Seema Patel, and Sara Ramirez as Che Diaz, a non-binary stand-up comedian.

“I’m glad that the writers and producers and Sarah Jessica Parker wanted to make that change, and wanted to do it right,” Parker says now. “The show now really reflects the city. It’s New York, you know?” Though the lack of diversity was “very obvious” to Parker back when she was tuning in as a fan, she say she “never went to the show to work that out for me. I just went to the show for what it was.” Although, she adds, laughing, “I felt bad for them that they didn’t have any Black girlfriends.”
