Nick Saban gives thoughts on Pete Golding that no Alabama fan wants to hear

Alabama fans who have had enough of defensive coordinator Pete Golding will not be happy to hear Nick Saban’s latest thoughts on his job performance.

In the middle of a two-loss season, there are two scapegoats that most Alabama fans seem to agree on: Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien and defensive coordinator Pete Golding.

Those who would love to see Saban make a change at both spots may want to look away. It definitely doesn’t sound like Golding’s job is in danger at least.

Ahead of Alabama’s game against Austin Peay, Saban backed his DC.

Nick Saban on Alabama DC Pete Golding: “He’s done a very good job.”

“He’s done a very good job with the personnel that we have, and I just really appreciate the really good job that he’s done,” Saban said per Charlie Potter of 247Sports. “I think he’s made really positive steps since he’s been here.”

Many an Alabama fan would disagree with that statement, especially after watching Tennessee score 52 points and LSU score 32 points in the Crimson Tide’s losses this season.

Statistically, things aren’t so bad for Alabama’s defense. They’re 16th in total defense, 15th in scoring defense, 20th in rushing defense and 11th in passing efficiency defense.

The real issue is how they’ve performed in the most important games of the season. It doesn’t matter if you rank in the Top 20 of every statistical category if you can’t come up with meaningful stops when they matter most. That’s what Crimson Tide fans are frustrated by.

College football has changed considerably over the last few years with offenses becoming increasingly formidable. Still, it hasn’t gone unnoticed that Golding has never had a defense that averaged fewer than 18 points allowed per game. He took over a defense in 2018 that allowed 18 points per game just once in the previous decade.
