The NFL playoff picture is heating up, which also means that in some parts of the country, the weather is dropping, and road games are becoming unequal. And, of course, Christmas time takes center stage with football having to co-exist. This year, the NFL will feature two full football days, including three games on Christmas Day spread out throughout the afternoon and evening.
In the first game of the tripleheader, Green Bay (6-8) travels to the Sunshine State to take on the Miami Dolphins (8-6) in a critical game for both teams and their playoff hopes. The Packers need to win out and get some help to make the playoffs, as the Minnesota Vikings clinched the NFC North championship in a 33-point comeback Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts. Green Bay has won two-straight games, while the Dolphins, who have dealt with many injuries, are still in the thick of the AFC wildcard and AFC East title picture.
Following Dolphins-Packers, the L.A. Rams (4-10) will host the Denver Broncos (4-10). While there aren’t any immediate playoff implications, both teams are fighting for draft positioning and to finish their respective seasons on a high note. The Rams were eliminated Monday night against the Packers, as the defending Super Bowl champions only scored 12 points at Lambeau Field. For Denver, it has struggled against the pass, giving up over 230 yards in its last three games despite being ranked top-4 in opposition pass defense across the league. The Broncos have not smelled the postseason since winning the 2016 Super Bowl.
The nightcap closes out the NFL extravaganza with Tampa Bay (6-8) traveling to Arizona (4-10) in another edition of Sunday Night Football. The Cardinals are out of playoff contention, but for Tom Brady and Co., the January push to the second season starts this week, as the Buccaneers will need to finish 3-0 down the stretch to clinch the NFC South title and earn a postseason berth. Both teams are coming off losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and Broncos in Week 15.
