It later emerged that the player in question was Colts cornerback and kick returner Rodgers.

The former sixth-round pick acknowledged the probe later Monday evening, claiming he would do ‘whatever it takes’ to rectify the situation.

‘I know I have made mistakes and I am willing to do whatever it takes to repair the situation. The last think I ever wanted to do was to be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches and my teammates.

‘I’ve let people down that I care about. I made an error in judgement and I am going to work hard to make sure that those mistakes ae rectified through this pricess.

‘It’s an honor to play in the NFL and I have never taken that lightly. I am very sorry for all of this.’

The Colts organization acknowledged the probe Monday afternoon, releasing a statement that read: ‘We are aware of the NFL’s investigation and will have no further comment at this time.’

ESPN reported that a sportsbook account in the name of one of Rodgers’ associates placed around 100 bets over an undisclosed amount of time.

Most of the bets, which included ones made on Colts games, are said to have been in the $25-$50 range but there reportedly was one notable low four-figure bet.

A sixth-round pick, Rodgers is entering the final year of a four-year, $3.4 million contract.

It comes after sporthandle.com released a report claiming that an investigation was ongoing into Colts player’s ‘pervasive’ betting, including wagers placed on his own team.

The NFL announced in April that it had suspended five players for gambling on games in the 2022 season – with punishments set to take effect in the upcoming 2023 season.

According to a league statement, three players were indefinitely suspended, with all of them sitting for at least the 2023 season. Those players are wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore of the Detroit Lions as well as defensive end Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders.

In addition, two other Lions players – both of whom are rookies – received lighter punishments. Star receiver Jameson Williams and fellow pass catcher Stanley Berryhill were suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, ‘those suspended at least a year were found to have [gambled] on NFL games. Those suspended six games place bets on college games but from their [team’s] facility.’

After their suspension was announced, the Detroit Lions released Cephus and Moore from the team while also criticizing Williams and Berryhill.

‘As a result of an NFL investigation, it came to our attention that a few of our players had violated the league’s gambling policy,’ Detroit Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes said in a statement.

‘These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules. We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately.

‘We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.’

In the NFL’s statement, they highlighted one part of their gambling policy prohibiting anyone in the league from, ‘engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility.’

The league statement added that a review found, ‘no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.’

Last year, then-Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on NFL games over five games while away from the team.

Ridley was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars at last November’s trading deadline and was reinstated in March.
