New York Mets’ star closer Edwin Diaz will not pitch back-to-back days at WBC until late March

New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz will not pitch successive days for Puerto Rico during the World Baseball Classic until at least late-March.

‘Yea, I’ve got some restrictions. I won’t pick back-to-back days,’ Diaz told Foul Territory TV, who will leave Monday to join Team Puerto Rico in Miami.

‘Because it’s early-March, mid-March so it like if I pitch today I have to have the next day off.

‘Let’s see if we get into the finals, if I have to pitch back-to-back in the finals I think the Mets will let me go and pitch back-to-back because it’s the end of March. So I think I can pitch back-to-back a the end of March.’

It makes sense that the Mets would be cautious with Diaz’s involvement during the WBC after they just re-signed him to a five-year, $102million contract, the largest ever given to a relief pitcher.

Diaz will play alongside his younger brother. Cincinnati Reds pitcher Alexis Diaz 1.84 ERA in 59 appearances, while primarily appearing in a setup role.

Edwin, 28, has never played on the same team as his 26-year-old brother due to their age gap. 

He said his dream is to save a game for Puerto Rico after his little brother has pitched the eighth inning.

‘I think that will happen,’ Diaz said. 

‘We have got three or four closers and all those guys won’t pitch the same day.

‘So, me and [Alexis] can pitch the same day and the other two closers can go the other day. That would be really good.’

It will be his first chance to play on the same team as his younger brother Alexis Diaz
