  • The New York Jets began the NFL season by remembering the 9/11 victims
  • Players wore commemorative t-shirts and a moment of silence was held

New York Jets stars wore ‘Never Forget’ t-shirts paying tribute to the victims of September 11 on Sunday, the 21st anniversary of the terror attack.

Jordan Whitehead, Ty Johnson, Dan Feeney and Conor McDermott were all seen wearing the shirts alongside their team-mates on arrival at the MetLife stadium prior to the season opener against Baltimore Ravens.

It comes as every NFL match held a moment of silence before kickoff while tributes were paid across the city of New York. A particularly poignant and heartfelt rendition of the National Anthem followed at the MetLife.

Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff participated in a commemoration ceremony at ground zero.

Also spotted at the event were Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and and former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Mourners were seen Sunday morning placing flags with red and blue stripes in the engraved names of the heroes who died that day 21 years ago at the memorial that now stands at the site of the former World Trade Center.

The annual ceremony was scheduled to begin at 8.30am on Sunday, with family members and friends reading off the names of the victims of the terrorist attack, which will conclude at around 12.30pm.

For the Jets and the game on Sunday, attention is on quarterback Joe Flacco who is starting against his old Ravens team.

Flacco is expected to at least play for the first three games with starting quarterback Zach Wilson recovering from surgery on his knee.

On a wider level, the Jets have gone 11 years without making the playoffs and six seasons without a winning record. But a new season always brings fresh hope.

‘What’s great about this team is I know we have them, and it’s going to be so fun to watch this team kind of grow up this year in terms of who those dudes are that step up in the fourth quarter,’ head coach Robert Saleh said.

‘Whether a coach is making the call or players are stepping up and making the unbelievable happen or the magnificent happen or whatever you want to call it, but that’s going to be what’s great about this year, and then who knows from there.

‘I’m just really excited because I think we’ve got a really good thing going here, and it’s going to be fun to watch it evolve.’
