New Flames GM Conroy hopes he can add Iginla to front office at some point

Craig Conroy isn’t reuniting with Jarome Iginla just yet, but the new Calgary Flames general manager hopes they can join forces in the team’s front office in the future.

“We’ve always expressed an interest of working together,” Conroy said after he officially was named to the role on Tuesday. “I know right now he’s coaching (in) Kelowna and he has his son Joe. But this is definitely something I want to explore moving forward, but haven’t done it right yet.”

Iginla has said publicly he wants to coach his son, for one more year. Joe was just drafted by the Edmonton Oil Kings 12th overall in the Western Hockey League Prospects Draft earlier this month.

But Iginla has been publicly supportive of his friend Conroy for the GM position throughout the team’s search.

“He’s a great competitor, played a thousand games, he’s a very smart hockey person,” Iginla said on a Sportsnet960 radio interview last month. “I’m excited. I really hope he gets it. I think he’d do a great job. He loves Calgary.”

Conroy and Iginla were teammates on the Flames from 2001-11, and helped Calgary reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.

Conroy handed over the captain’s ‘C’ to Iginla in 2003.
