Negative reviews by netizens for Shotgun Wedding mar the film’s opening week on OTT – Times of India
That’s a sure-shot formula for an entertainer, but despite the presence of the two Jennifers, Josh Duhamel, Lenny Kravitz and Sonia Brava, let’s ascertain whether it is worth your while to watch.
Here is a telling comment by sudiniup who awarded it a middling 6/10 on IMDb: “Did the majority of the writers for movies quit or take a long vacation? Yes, there are many great and talented people in this movie but a movie needs a story. It needs characters written with personalities and clever, and hopefully witty words to say.” For this reviewer, the saving grace was: “The scenery is gorgeous. Jennifer Lopez is gorgeous.”
So, a lot depends on what your motives are for watching this action-romcom. If JLo is one of them, then go ahead, as Posterboy1 declares: “Jlo is easy on the eyes and in that respect it did pretty well.”
“Not a bad weekend watch” declares polsixe, who adds, “Standard second bananas fill out a wedding party cast, colourful personalities getting a few one liners and… gags. It’s decent but nothing overly new or surprising.”
Critics, too, are divided in their reactions, like the audience. The Boston Globe critic describes it as “an action movie/romantic comedy hybrid that’s too violent for comedy fans and not thrilling enough for thrill seekers,” but the LA Times critic was decidedly kinder. “Once the plot kicks in and the characters separate (and settle down), Shotgun Wedding becomes much more entertaining, highlighted by the comic push-and-pull between its two leads, Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel.”
Let’s turn to Twitter now for some early tweets. Here’s one by Franz Hernandez: “Do yourself a favor and DON’T watch shotgun wedding. It’s the corniest, worst film I’ve seen in a while, that’s saying a lot because I’m pretty easy to please….(crying emoji). Even Jennifer Coolidge couldn’t save this mess.”
There were directorial changes through the making of the film, including the earlier choice for lead actor dropping out and Josh Duhamel coming in. There also seems to be a casting mismatch, as hayley’s tweet reveals: “in Shotgun Wedding Jennifer Coolidge plays Josh Duhamel’s mom. He is 50 and she is 61.”
CJ Amado tweeted another random thought: “Funny how both recent Western movies of Shotgun Wedding (Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Coolidge) and Plane (Gerald Butler) portray the Philippines Islands as (a) land of bandits. What’s with the trend?”
It may leave you wondering too and with all the negative comments and the very, very average rating of 5.5/10 on IMDb, it is really up to you to decide whether you want to watch Shotgun Wedding or not.
