NBA rumors: Whispers getting louder over damning fate for Zion Williamson’s future with Pelicans
According to Bill Simmons, it seems like Zion Williamson may have played his last game in New Orleans. There have been tons of rumors saying that Williamson will end up being traded this off-season. What does this mean for the Pelicans? How likely is this situation?
Appearing on his podcast, he said that “The Zion thing is a real, real, real, subplot. I had somebody tell me yesterday — that I trust — that he will not be on [the Pelicans] by Thursday.” It has been rumored that the Pelicans have been heavily interested in the second overall pick.
According to previous reports, New Orleans is open to trading Williamson for the number two overall pick, with which they would presumably be selecting Scoot Henderson. The Hornets do not seem interested in getting Williamson in a possible deal and would rather prefer Brandon Ingram.
Why are the Pelicans trying to move Zion Williamson?
Zion Williamson hasn’t been healthy during his career with the Pelicans. The All-NBA player has only played more than 60 games in one season only once in his four seasons in the NBA. When he has played, he has been dominant.
There have been times when Williamson’s contact with the team has been reported as tenuous at best, and recent off-court issues have been distracting.
New Orleans seems to be looking at dumping Williamson before his mega-extension kicks in. If these issues would continue to happen, Williamson would be viewed as a huge negative asset and could cost the Pelicans a chance to compete during the Brandon Ingram.
If the Rockets were not able to get James Harden, they could make a move for the All-NBA player. They are looking at making a push toward competitiveness due to the fact that they are tired of rebuilding.
