Natasha Jonas aiming for rematch against Katie Taylor in career swansong | Boxing News
AHEAD of her fight against Kandi Wyatt on Saturday night Natasha Jonas has spoken of her desire to gain revenge for one particular defeat in her career.
Jonas drops down to welterweight to face the Canadian at the AO Arena, Manchester hoping to add the WBO belt to her three at 154lbs.
Next year the Liverpudlian hits the 40-year-old milestone and despite attempts to secure a rematch against Terri Harper and a blockbuster against Claressa Shields proving unsuccessful an alternative has sprang to mind
In 2021 Jonas 13-2-1 (8) reunited with old amateur rival Katie Taylor nine months on from the split draw against Harper. As boxing found itself in a Covid bubble stars like Taylor, Jonas and Harper put on tremendous fights in front of no audience.
Taylor v Jonas was everything we hoped but at the end of ten rounds it was the Irishwoman who had her hand raised.
Speaking to Sky Sports both Jonas and her trainer Joe Gallagher agreed a rematch is a must.
“100 per cent, I need to put my mind at peace, I need revenge!” said Jonas.
Gallagher added: “I’ve said to Tasha, ‘Your perfect farewell fight is you and Katie Taylor, it doesn’t need world titles, it just needs you two, two old rivals over the last 12 or 13 years to have one last dance and go off into the sunset together’.
“I still think it’s a competitive fight, it’s just a rivalry that we’d like to see again. It was a great fight last time in Manchester behind closed doors and it would be great for the public.
“It would be good for both of them to go out that way, that’s me in my romantic mode!”
Taylor has one rematch of her own to finalise. After losing to Chantelle Cameron last month the two leading ladies are expected to fight once again later this year with their promoter Eddie Hearn looking at reuniting the pair in November.
