“My wife’s parents interfere a lot” – Times of India

Query: We belong to a middle-class family and all was known to my wife and her parents before we got married. My wife belongs to the upper middle class but never imposed anything on me nor acted differently post-marriage. However, my in-laws started interfering in our household after the marriage. They try to control everything, right from our monthly home expenses to what we eat and drink. My own parents who live in another state let us be because they believe in giving space. I asked my wife to handle this but she thinks it is how her parents show love. It is sometimes humiliating, and I do not even feel like meeting them anymore. What should I do?

Expert advice by Vishal Bhardwaj, Founder and Relationship coach at Predictions For Success

The concept of personal space is very subjective. Sometimes a young couple needs some guidance in life while starting a new journey but that should be confined to general financial or life matters. This needs to be discussed with parents if their intervention has gone too personal that too without even children asking or seeking their advice. If it is ruining their nuptial bliss, boundaries need to be firmed up.

We understand the importance of personal space. It is so disturbing that your in-laws keep intervening in your private life, without thinking about your comfort. However, you need to be vocal about it to your wife and trust that she will manage the whole situation. Explain your concerns maturely to her and ask her to take charge here. She will be able to make the in-laws understand the situation better without making it awkward for you and for your inlaws. This will maintain harmony and boundaries. It is never easy for her to interrogate her parents but she has to do that for the sake of her marital life.
