My next novel is called ‘Burden of Proof’: Anita Nair – Times of India
“I have just finished writing my third ‘Inspector Gowda’ novel called ‘Burden of Proof’,” said Anita while in conversation with Kalpana Sharma – Lifestyle Editor at Times of India.
The earlier installments of the ‘Inspector Gowda’ book series include ‘A Cut-Like Wound’ (2012) and ‘Chain of Custody’ (2016). Psychological thriller at heart, the series draws the readers into a world of crime, transgenders, and sexual abuse while the protagonist and his team try to unravel the layers of lies that can lead to the truth.
Not only this, but Anita also mentioned that her first collection of short stories is coming out in the form of an audiobook. The author’s other audiobooks, namely ‘The Little Duck Girl’, ‘A Field of Flowers’, and ‘Why I Killed My Husband’ are already a hit among literary enthusiasts.
Talking about the difference between audio and print medium, Anita said, “One of the striking differences between writing fiction that is to be read and fiction that is to be listened to is how you need to be very careful with the choice of words.”
Kalpana stressed the fact that Anita’s works always have complex situations and consist of strong women characters fighting and standing up for their rights.
“It was in my teens that I started realizing that women are seen differently. The moment I became a ‘woman’, I started realizing restrictions were being imposed, even in my household and that began to bother me,” said Anita while responding to Kalpana’s comment.
“I think that seed of anger and rebellion was sown at that point. When I started writing, I constantly found that women are treated differently. I began thinking that I should start writing about it,” she added.
Furthermore, Anita stated that her form of fighting against the injustices around the world is through words and her stories. One of the things that she has always wanted to do is that whatever she writes should leave a “residual message”, which should make her readers think, and make them evaluate what is happening around them.
Elaborating on the same, she said, “After ‘Ladies Coupe’ (2001) was released, I became very certain that what I wanted to write about the human condition, no matter what genre or form it takes.”
Finally, giving her readers a last tidbit, Anita mentioned that she is creating a new genre of her own: “I am trying to create a genre which is called ‘state of the nation’ because it pretty much draws on things that are happening in our country around us and the kind of impact it has on individual characters.”
