Mumbai resident says going by air to Goa is cheaper than taking an Uber

A resident of Mumbai expressed his shock on Twitter after seeing Uber charge him Rs. 3,041 for a 50 km ride to Goa. He further said that flight to the city is cheaper.

A Mumbai resident took to Twitter to share his experience with Uber when the transportation company showed him the estimated fare of Rs. 3,041 for a 50 km trip. The overpriced charge showed that taking the Premier would cost him Rs. 4,081, while the XL would be Rs. 5,159.

The man, Shravankumar Suvarna, was booking a cab to his home when it was raining heavily. The exorbitant fare of thousands shocked him a lot. He posted about this incident on his Twitter account by sharing screenshots of the app.

The screenshot contained prices for the three different car options. After Mr Shravankumar’s tweet, many people replied to his tweet expressing their thoughts. Rahul Kumar, a Twitter user, calculated what the charge would have been by the book.

He questioned whether diesel or petrol is costly and added that the estimated distance in question would approximately be 50 km. Thus, as per 10km mileage, the cost would be around Rs. 500, but the company is charging him an extra Rs. 2,500. He concluded that the charge of Rs. 1200 would be sufficient for this ride.

Replying to this user, Mr. Shravankumar said that usually, he pays around Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,000 for the same distance, when there isn’t a surge in the prices. Another user, Soushant Routray, reacted to this incident by calling it ‘exploitation’. He further added that the company must take another look at its algorithm.

Siddharth Jain, another user, joked that the fare of Rs. Rs. 5,159 for the Uber XL would get Mr. Shravankumar a 1-BHK flat on the outskirts of the city of Nashik without any trouble.

Sameer, a Twitter user, replied to Mr. Shravankumar’s tweet by sharing how everywhere, it’s the same story and Uber/Ola cab drivers in Bangalore surge the price before it rains or the flights land. Surged prices during such situations are understandable, but when the fares are higher than a flight fare, it becomes astonishing.
